Moses Lifts the Bronze Serpent

Moses stands among the suffering Israelites, raising the serpent on the staff as the people look upward for deliverance. Men, women, and a child gather at his feet, some kneeling in prayer and others reaching toward the sign God commanded Moses to lift in the wilderness. A serpent lies near the foreground, emphasizing the plague of fiery serpents and the urgent need for obedient faith.

The scene depicts Numbers 21:4-9, when Israel’s rebellion brought judgment, yet God provided mercy through a visible sign: whoever looked upon the bronze serpent lived. In Christian interpretation, this moment also foreshadows Christ’s words in John 3:14-15, where the lifted serpent becomes a type of the Son of Man lifted up, calling all who believe to receive life.
