Description
Moses stands before the camp of Israel holding a raised staff crowned with the bronze serpent, while the people look upward in desperate faith among wilderness tents and distant mountains. The scene portrays the moment in Numbers 21 when the Israelites, stricken after their rebellion, are given a merciful sign from God: whoever looks upon the serpent lifted high is spared. The lifted serpent becomes a vivid biblical symbol of judgment met by grace, obedience met by healing, and faith directed toward God’s appointed provision. In Christian teaching, this wilderness event also foreshadows Christ lifted up, as Jesus connects it to His own saving work in the Gospel of John.
