Around the well opening, several men watch with grave attention, placing the moment inside the confined courts and passages of ancient Jerusalem. The scene reflects the rescue recorded in Jeremiah 38, when the prophet was cast into a muddy cistern for speaking the word of the Lord and was later lifted out through the compassion and courage of Ebed-Melek.

The composition emphasizes deliverance from abandonment: the dark stone shaft frames Jeremiah below, while warm light above surrounds those helping him rise.
