Joseph’s brothers stand before Jacob in the desert, presenting the torn, blood-stained coat that once marked Joseph as his father’s beloved son. The richly patterned garment hangs in their hands as evidence for a cruel deception, while Jacob receives the news with troubled attention and a grieving woman stands nearby. The setting of palms, sand, and distant hills places the betrayal within the patriarchal world of Genesis.

This scene portrays the aftermath of Joseph being sold by his brothers. They dip his coat in blood and bring it to their father, allowing Jacob to conclude that a wild animal has devoured him. The image captures the moral weight of envy, deceit, and family sorrow, while also pointing forward to God’s providence: the rejected son will later become the means of deliverance for his household.
